7 Deck Maintenance Tips to Extend Its Lifespan

    August 22, 20245 min read

Your deck is an investment in outdoor living. Whether it's composite or wood, regular maintenance keeps it looking great and structurally sound.

    1. Clean Annually

Power wash (on a low setting for composite) or scrub with a deck cleaner every spring. Remove debris, mold, and mildew before they cause damage.

    2. Inspect for Damage

Walk your entire deck each spring. Look for loose boards, popped nails, wobbly railings, and signs of rot. Catching problems early prevents expensive repairs later.

    3. Stain and Seal (Wood Decks)

Wood decks need staining and sealing every 1–2 years. Use a penetrating stain for the best protection. This is the single most important maintenance task for wood decks.

    4. Check the Ledger Board

The ledger board (where the deck attaches to your house) is a critical connection point. Check for proper flashing, corrosion on fasteners, and any signs of water intrusion.

    5. Keep It Clear

Don't let leaves, pine needles, and debris accumulate — especially between boards. Trapped moisture accelerates rot and promotes mold growth.

    6. Mind the Gaps

Deck boards should have consistent spacing (typically 1/8") for drainage and airflow. If boards have swelled shut, they may need trimming.

    7. Address Structural Issues Immediately

Wobbly posts, sagging beams, and bouncy joists aren't just cosmetic — they're safety hazards. Don't put off structural repairs.
