  1. Licensed and insured — In Rhode Island, contractors need a registration number from the Contractors' Registration Board. Ask for it and verify it.
  2. Written estimates — Professional contractors provide detailed, line-item estimates — not vague ballpark numbers.
  3. References and reviews — Look for consistent positive reviews on Google, and ask for references from recent projects.
  4. Clear communication — They return calls promptly, explain the process, and set realistic timelines.
  5. They pull permits — Reputable contractors handle all necessary permits. If they suggest skipping permits, run.
  6. Warranty information — They stand behind their work with clear warranty terms.
