Preparing Your Home for a New England Winter: Complete Checklist

    July 10, 20248 min read

New England winters are no joke. Ice dams, frozen pipes, heavy snow loads, and bitter cold can cause thousands of dollars in damage if your home isn't prepared. Use this checklist to get ahead of winter.

    Roof & Gutters

  1. Inspect your roof for missing, cracked, or curling shingles
  2. Clean gutters and downspouts — clogged gutters are a leading cause of ice dams
  3. Check flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vents
  4. Trim overhanging branches that could break under snow load
  5. Consider heat cables for ice dam-prone areas
  6. Exterior

  7. Inspect siding for cracks, gaps, or loose panels
  8. Seal gaps around windows, doors, and where utilities enter
  9. Check caulking and replace any that's cracked or peeling
  10. Disconnect garden hoses and shut off exterior water supplies
  11. Cover or store outdoor furniture
  12. Attic & Insulation

  13. Check attic insulation — R-49 or higher is recommended for New England
  14. Ensure proper ventilation — balanced intake and exhaust prevents ice dams
  15. Seal air leaks around recessed lights, plumbing stacks, and attic hatches
  16. Check for moisture or signs of previous leaks
  17. Heating System

  18. Service your furnace/boiler — annual tune-ups prevent mid-winter breakdowns
  19. Replace air filters
  20. Bleed radiators if you have hydronic heating
  21. Test your thermostat and consider a programmable or smart model
  22. Emergency Prep

  23. Know your shutoff locations for water, gas, and electrical
  24. Stock de-icing salt and snow removal tools
  25. Have a backup heat source and flashlights with fresh batteries
  26. Know who to call for emergency roof and ice dam service
  27. Don't Wait

The best time to prepare is before the first frost. Many of these tasks — especially roof repairs and insulation upgrades — should be done in fall when contractors are available and weather cooperates.
